Repair A Wooden Fence That Is Leaning

Posted on: 17 March 2023

Inclement weather, soil erosion, and rotted wood sections could cause a wooden fence to lean. If the fence that is surrounding your property contains one or more panels that are leaning, contact a fencing contractor to perform the necessary repair processes.

The Preliminary Steps

A fencing contractor will likely need to access both sides of the fence. If the fence borders the property of a neighbor, let the neighbor know in advance that you will be having a contractor stop by to inspect and repair the fence.

Remove any fallen debris that is located alongside the fence. Contact a fencing contractor who specializes in the installation and repair of wooden fences. Describe the fencing style you own, and schedule an appointment to have the fence professionally inspected.

The Inspection

The contractor will inspect both sides of the fence in its entirety. They will check the fence posts, to determine if they are secure in the ground. They will visually and manually assess each wooden fence panel. If strong winds caused the fence to tip over, some of the wood that comprises a panel could be splintered.

After the inspection process, the contractor will draw up a proposal. This proposal will list the problems that were discovered, the repair processes, and the costs that you will be charged. Decide if you are in agreement with the proposal. If you would like to move forward with the repair process, schedule an appointment through the contractor.

The Repairs

If any of the posts came loose when the fence tipped over, the contractor will detach them from the wooden fencing panels that they were formerly secured to. They will clear the land and prepare the fence post holes that will be needed to install the posts.

Your contractor may add concrete to each post hole that will be supporting a post. Any hardware that came loose from posts or panels will be removed. Fencing materials will be cleaned. Then, all of the materials that comprise the fence will be realigned and reinstalled.

If the damage to the fencing was severe, the fencing contractor may need to replace one more of the wooden fencing panels. If the damage to a panel wasn't severe, the contractor may be able to salvage the panel. Once the fence has been restored, it is in your best interest to hire a professional to inspect and clean the fence on an annual basis.
