4 Things To Think About When Building A Wood Fence

Posted on: 2 November 2020

Think you're ready to build a wood fence around your backyard? If so, it is important to think about the following things before you get started.

Consider The Purpose

You'll always want to ask yourself why you are building a fence since that will likely impact the material that you use or the height of the fence. Is the purpose to give yourself privacy from neighbors? Do you want to keep a pet contained in your yard? Do you simply want to establish a property line to prevent others from being on your property? These are all examples of different purposes that will use different construction materials.

Consider The Property Line

It is crucial that you get a land survey done prior to having any fence built. You may think that you have an idea of where that property line is, but you really don't know unless you have a professional come out and mark off where your property begins and ends. Even if you have a neighbor that is fine with where you will be building a fence, you don't know what someone else will say if they move into a surrounding home. You could end up with a neighbor that insists that you move a fence built slightly on their property, and they would have the legal right to force you to do so.

Consider The Local Regulations

Every city has their own building regulations regarding fence construction. This includes where a fence can be built, how tall the fence can be, and even how close to your home you can have a fence. If you live in a homeowner's association, there can be even more regulations over the type of fence you have. This can include the color of the fence, what the fence is made out of, and additional height restrictions that are more strict than the city regulations. Not following regulations will only be an expensive mistake that you have to fix later.

Consider Quality Vs Cost

Even if you have your fence narrowed down, you'll need to make further decisions on quality and costs. For example, if you are installing a wood privacy fence, a cedar fence with metal posts is going to be much more durable and last longer than a pine fence with wood posts. If you plan on moving out of the home in the near future, you may want to select the cheaper option so that you don't spend too much.
