Stain Options For Your Fence

Staining is one of the best things you can do to prolong the life and appearance of your wooden fence. Wood fences rot and warp when moisture gets into the wood fibers, but stains provide a protective layer that prevents this from happening, thus ensuring that the fence lasts for many years. A new coat of stain also gives the fence a facelift so that it looks nearly new again. You do have several choices when it comes to stain, so it is important to do some research.

Oil-Based Stains

An oil-based stain typically uses linseed oil for a base, with added pigments and dyes for color. Oil-based stains are some of the most widely available simply because they are simple for novices to apply and they are long-lasting. An oil-based stain should be applied in warm weather, as it won't dry properly in cooler temperatures. It takes about a day for the stain to fully dry, so it is also a quick option if you are on a tight schedule.

Water-Based Stains

If you are looking for an eco-friendly option with minimal off-gassing, a water-based stain may work for you. These stains don't contain oils or thinners in their base, only water. The main drawback with a water-based stain is that it can raise the grain of the wood as the moisture seeps in, which may not be very attractive. Further, the stain dries very quickly, sometimes within a few minutes on a hot day, so it can be difficult to apply an even coat.

Varnish

A varnish is similar to an oil-based stain, but these use polyurethane as the base. Varnish acts more like a paint than a stain, as it creates a hard coating instead of simply soaking into the wood. This results in a deeper, more even color. Opt for varnish if you have a badly discolored fence or bits of old stain left that will be difficult to cover with a more translucent oil or water-based stain.

Metallized Stain

These stains contain a metallized dye, which is more resistant to fading in the sun. The stain has an acetone base. They are applied similar to an oil-based stain and dry nearly as quickly. Metallized stains are a good option in areas with long sunny days, where sun and UV fading is a constant problem.
